Haleyville Fire 2011.

Haleyville Fire/Rescue responded to it's largest fire in several years at the abandoned Bama Textile Mill on Thursday September 1st, 2011 at 12:38 p.m.

Workers cutting away steel structures for scrap is believed to have started a fire which destroyed approximately 200,000 square feet of the 265,000 sq. ft. buildings. The original building, located in the back of the present facility, was built in 1919 and contained the Strut Ware company. Over the years it remained a textile operation which grew in size. The company changed owners and names several times during the late forties and early fifties. For many years it was the largest employer in the area. The textile shut down in the early 1990's.

Responding apparatus and departments included: Haleyville Pumpers 1,2, Rescues 1,2, Ladder 1, Tanker 5 and mutual aid from the following departments: Delmar, Bear Creek, Pebble, Lynn, East Franklin, Phil Campbell, Russellville, Sunny Home, Shiloh, Hamilton, Ash Ridge, Black Pond, Brilliant, Hackleburg, Winfield, Double Springs, Twin, Guin, Tharptown, Central, Arley, Muscle Shoals,Sheffield, Florence, Frog Pond, Colbert County Haz Mat Team, Regional Paramedical Services, Northstar Paramedic Services, Haleyville Police Department, Winston County Sheriff Department, Haleyville Street Department, Haleyville Rescue Squad, Haleyville Park & Recreation, Alabama Power, Norfolk Southern Railroad and Gilbert Excavating. Area firefighters began being released around 4:00 p.m. with Haleyville firefighters returning to service at approximately 2:30 a.m. Haleyville Fire returned to the scene on a rekindle at 8:19 p.m. on Friday evening and remained on the scene until 11:36 p.m.
